Why I'm a Designer
If you were around in the ‘70s or ‘80s, you probably remember the Magic Slate. This drawing tablet, consisting of a sheet of acetate on top of a dark, waxy piece of cardboard with a red plastic “pencil” for drawing, was my artist’s tool of choice. Just a quick lift of the acetate provided a clean slate—magic! (Okay, maybe not, but I was enthralled with mine.)
One of the Magic Slate drawings I remember being praised for was a portrait of my grandfather, in profile. He had quite the large, Italian nose, and I apparently got it just right. Grandpa, who was also an artist, laughed and lamented that we couldn’t save it if I still wanted to be able to use my slate. After we showed the drawing around to everyone, I lifted the acetate and the image was gone. My joy, however, remained.
I believe that moment was where my future career took root.
The tools of my trade have changed, of course—I can save my work now—but the amount of joy I get when my clients love what I make for them hasn’t changed at all! And neither has the fact that I would kill to have this "Welcome Back Kotter" Magic Slate.

I am from Beloit, Wisconsin. I moved to Milwaukee for college and have since lived in Columbus, OH, Pittsburgh, PA, Fairbanks, AK and now State College, PA. I would like to think I am done moving at this point.
When I was in Fairbanks I began working for KTVF-TV, the NBC affiliate. When I moved back to PA I was allowed to take my job with me, so I've been telecommuting 4000 miles a day since 2006!
I am married and have three children: Joey (15), Lexi (14) and Claire (13). My husband, Craig, is a great guy, a wonderful dad, and he cracks me up all the time.
**UPDATE** My husband bought me the Welcome Back Kotter Magic Slate! Check it out!
